This guide is written for the person actually signing the PO - plant managers, maintenance managers, facilities engineers, and the industrial business owners who have to live with the decision for the next ten years. It skips the sales-pitch language and focuses on the trade-offs that matter.

Start With The Demand Profile, Not The Horsepower

Buyers routinely ask 'do I need a 50 HP or a 75 HP?' before they know their actual demand. The right first question is: how much air do I need, at what pressure, at what times? Everything else follows from that.

Nameplate CFM totals overstate load. Duty-cycle rules of thumb miss variable plants. If demand is unknown and the stakes are meaningful, log flow and pressure for a week before committing.

Rotary Screw Vs Reciprocating

Rotary screw wins any time run hours are more than a few hours a day of steady demand. Continuous-duty, quiet, and much more energy-efficient at high hours. Reciprocating is right for intermittent duty, backup roles, or specialty pressure - not for continuous production.

  • Rotary screw: continuous-duty, smoother output, higher up-front cost
  • Reciprocating: intermittent-duty, simpler mechanicals, louder, cheaper at small HP
  • Two-stage reciprocating for higher pressures (175 PSI+)

VSD Vs Fixed Speed

VSD matches output to demand and eliminates unloaded-runtime energy loss. It pays back on plants with variable load and rarely pays back on flat-load plants. Do not spec VSD just because it sounds efficient.

Air-Cooled Vs Water-Cooled

Air-cooled works for most plants and is simpler to install. Water-cooled makes sense on very large units, hot rooms, or where plant cooling water is already available. Water-cooled adds mechanical complexity and infrastructure that needs its own maintenance.

Dryer & Filtration Come With The Compressor

A compressor quote without a dryer, filtration, and receiver plan is not a system quote. The dryer must be sized for peak inlet CFM at worst-case ambient. Filtration classes must match the process the plant runs. Ignoring this at purchase means fixing it - expensively - later.

What To Ignore In The Sales Pitch

Marketing claims about 'lowest lifetime cost' and headline efficiency numbers rarely hold on real plants. What matters: manufacturer warranty terms, availability of parts and service in your region, and whether the local dealer can actually respond when the compressor fails at 2 AM.

What To Send For A Quote

Model, HP, and hours on your existing compressor. Approximate plant CFM demand or a description of the biggest air users. Shift schedule. Any known problems (pressure drop, wet air, cycling). Photos of the compressor room. From there, one site visit usually gets to a scope.
